This year, the Foundation continues to support SBHS’s efforts to address teen mental wellness. In past year, we have paid for additional mental health counseling and staffing for the Wellness Center. This year, we will address an underlying cause of mental illness: lack of connection. Our trained ASB teacher will work with ALL students and make sure that every student on campus is “connected to something and connected to someone.” If your student is struggling to find their place, please email lwoosterdorfman@sbunified.org. 

With more students staying on campus for lunch, we need more places for them to sit. We have purchased 20 heavy-duty metal picnic tables that will be located in shaded areas around campus. Bon appetit!

Help us replace our old vans! We have earmarked funds to replace two new vans so we can safely transport students to off campus events for games, field trips, and other activities. We need to replace all 6 in the next several years!

Our school auditorium is the largest indoor gathering space for students. We use this facility throughout the year for assemblies, parent information nights, class presentations and a wide variety of other school needs. The audiovisual equipment needed for these general, all-purpose school needs is obsolete — $61,000 will pay for upgraded lights, sound system and cameras to make our auditorium highly functional again.

The Foundation has a long history of helping make sure our most vulnerable students stay in school and on track by helping families with food, rent, health care expenses, or whatever they might need. Following the Thomas Fire and debris floods and the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation engaged in specific campaigns to augment these funds. Our #SBHSStrong continues to make a difference in the lives of individual students and their families.

The Foundation spends between $5,000 and $10,000 every year to support our unique Dons culture. We do this by paying for breakfast and coffee at all our staff meetings, buying lunch for teachers and administrators who attend extra meetings and willingly participate in extra meetings, rewarding students who improve their GPAs, and hosting special events for families, including our Sunrise and Sunset Chats with Principal Simmons.

Beginning in 2020-21, the Foundation and the PTSA have been operating one joint fundraising campaign. For each of the past three years, the PTSA has received a portion of our raised funds to support their volunteer efforts and good work, including the Learning Enrichment Grants (LEG). The LEG program encourages our innovative teachers to offer impactful learning experiences for our students, from field trips and speakers, to enriching activities and out-of-the-box classroom thinking.
